Hunter Wirt is a percussionist and educator based in Cleveland, OH. He earned his Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Marc Damoulakis and Paul Yancich, and currently continues there as the Robinson Orchestral Fellow. He received his Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from George Mason University, studying with John Kilkenny, Jon Bisesi, John Spirtas, and Jon Rance.
A versatile performer of orchestral, chamber, and contemporary works, Hunter holds positions as a percussionist with both the Canton Symphony Orchestra and the Ashland Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed as a substitute percussionist with The Cleveland Orchestra, West Virginia Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, and has appeared as guest principal timpanist with the Lima Symphony, Mansfield Symphony, and Ohio Valley Symphony. A recent career highlight includes being named a finalist for “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. An advocate for new music, he has collaborated with composers such as Joan Tower, Nico Muhly, Avner Dorman, and Margret Brouwer.
As an educator, Hunter emphasizes the connection between musical and personal growth. He teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Music Preparatory Academy, the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, and Bay Village Middle School, mentoring students through private lessons, masterclasses, and ensemble rehearsals. Before moving to Cleveland, he served as a percussion instructor and front ensemble technician for several Fairfax County high schools.
Outside of music, Hunter enjoys hiking, fishing, crabbing, and sharing good meals with friends.
