CYO Rocks the Stage & Screen

CYO performs 3-4 concerts each Season featuring contemporary orchestral works such as Jennifer Higdon’s Fanfare Ritmico, Mason Bates’s The B-Sides and Gustav Holst’s The Planets. Each year, CYO also performs our iconic Rock the Orchestra concert with a notable guest artist. Recent guests have included Jason Mraz, Melissa Etheridge, Kenny Loggins and Cleveland’s own Michael Stanley.

MacArthur Fellow and Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, singer, songwriter Chris Thile joins CYO for this year’s Rock The Orchestra online experience on May 28th at 7:00 pm EST.

Mr. Thile, who The Guardian calls “that rare being: an all-round musician who can settle into any style, from bluegrass to classical,” and NPR calls a “genre-defying musical genius,” is a founding member of the critically acclaimed bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek. For four years, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly A Prairie Home Companion).

With his broad outlook, Thile creates a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike, giving the listener “one joyous arc, with the linear melody and vertical harmony blurring into a single web of gossamer beauty” (New York Times).

A highlight of the distance recorded concert is four previously unrecorded Thile songs, meticulously arranged by Grammy-winning artist Rob Moose.

It’s a special evening of entertainment that includes solo performances by winners of the CYO Solo/Concerto Contest.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CYO has conducted all of our current season’s activities, rehearsals and performances online. With resilience, commitment and passion for music, our students have continued to grow through the CYO Experience. See all that they’ve achieved on our YouTube channel.
