CYOverture is a program operated by Contemporary Youth Orchestra (CYO), specifically designed for string players ages 10 and older.
In CYOverture, students who play violin, viola, cello, bass and harp will participate in a large ensemble setting operated by staff and faculty from the CYO community where we proudly foster a culture of community and belonging, welcome and support all young musicians.
CYOverture offers primarily middle school and upper elementary school students a place to meet and perform with peers who share their interests and playing ability. This string ensemble gives intermediate level string players the opportunity and environment to:
- advance their skills;
- socialize with peers;
- develop their musicianship with guidance from supportive educators;
In CYOverture, students will learn and enhance the following skills:
- how to follow a conductor;
- teamwork in an ensemble setting;
- how to synchronizing bowings;
- active listening;
- achieving balance and blend.
CYOverture also offers students the opportunity to play string orchestra music ranging from intermediate to advanced difficulty levels, perform in exceptional venues like the Maltz Performing Arts Center, collaborate with world-class professional musicians and meet composers, guest artists, and musicians. Students looking to elevate their skills and prepare to perform with advanced ensembles in high school are a great fit for CYOverture.
