LILLY ROMOND / SENIOR / 3 YEAR MEMBER

What do you think makes CYO special?

You can’t find anything else like this around. There are youth orchestras and I’ve done them, but this is contemporary and really chill.

What does contemporary mean to you?

It’s up-to-date and modern interpretations.

How was it playing at the APMAs?

At the Rock Hall, it was our first year, so it was crazy. They just threw us up there and were like, play. Sometimes we did and they played over us, but it was awesome. It was so much fun. I just remember having a blast. This year was sweet. I don’t know if you saw me throughout the week, but I didn’t stop smiling. I was really feelin’ myself. It was amazing.

Outside of music, what do you like to do?

I don’t do much, except I model. It’s kind of boring. I mean, I like it, but music is my thing.

What’s the dream job?

I don’t know. I just have to do something with music. Whatever it is, I’ll do it. I love performing. I can’t teach. I’ve tried, but my mouth is just not kid-friendly. Teaching, I can’t, but I love performing. I would love to get a job performing anything. I’m not going to say I like being the center of attention, but I like being in all that energy. I dig that. I do recordings with a local artist and he has me do a bunch of improv because he’s a singer-songwriter and he asks for my opinion of what would be cool musically to add. So I listen and I just add things. I just recently really got into improv, so I feel like that’s something cool. I want to do something more than that, like a contemporary quartet. I think that’d be sick. I just want to run around and play my viola and get paid for it.

Where’s the coolest place you’ve ever gone on vacation?

I mean, I like going to Connecticut to visit family. It’s really chill and my family lives an hour away from Manhattan, so you can just drive in for the day. It’s the best of both worlds.

What kind of music are you listening to?

I listen to weird music, I’m not going to lie. Right now, I really really really like Kendrick Lamar. He’s so talented and I feel like people don’t give him a fair chance. They kind of just classify modern rap as all the same thing, but he’s so above and beyond other rappers. You can’t say Waka Flocka rapping about women inappropriately is the same as Kendrick rapping about things that are actually going on in the world today. You can’t compare them to each other. They’re not even in the same category. But Kendrick is my fave, then who else? Um, I listen to Panic at the Disco a lot. Some random things. Cool remixes of things, mash-ups of stuff. I listen to a lot of Stevie Wonder. I’ve always liked him. I think all of his music is great and he’s very inspirational. I listen to Marina and the Diamonds a lot because she’s so cute and I like her music. It depends how I’m feeling.

What’s a secret talent that you have that people don’t know?

I know a lot about armadillos. When I took the practice ACT they had a segment on armadillos and I got 100% on it. They’re awesome. When they’re born, they can see. Their eyes are open.

Do you have any pets?

I have a German shepherd named Pookie and an English setter named Remmi. They’re my babies. I really like dogs a lot. Pookie is my daughter. She’s about three now. She’s such a baby, it’s just so cute. She has these huge ears that feel like velvet.
